GetUp!

Overview

• Provide a one week training course to key team members
• Help development team to shift technologies
• Mentor team members

GetUp! is an independent, community driven, not-for-profit organisation that seeks to inspire and educate everyday Australians about political issues and the democratic process. GetUp! Australia’s campaigns are generally coordinated and carried out through the Internet via their website and emails. Currently GetUp! has over 300,000 members that actively use the website. Recently GetUp! switched it’s core technologies from PHP to Ruby on Rails in an effort to improve internal processes.

Brief

We were asked to develop a custom training course that would educate team members about the switch to Ruby on Rails and provide best practices for development.

Our Solution

The 20 hour custom training course was split into two parts - introducing the team to Ruby on Rails and testing.

• Introduction
• Provided an initial primer about Ruby on Rails.
• Discussed the framework including concepts such as ActiveRecord, ActionController and ActionView.
• Explained and demonstrated the effectiveness of plugins and third-party tools.
• Testing
• Introduced the team to the principles of Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) and Test Driven Development (TDD) using tools such as Cucumber and RSpec.

We have continued to work closely with the GetUp! team, providing mentoring and additional training when requested.

Result

The GetUp! website and administrative controls underwent significant change with the switch to Ruby on Rails. By taking part in the training course provided by Brown Beagle Software the team were able to improve efficiency and are now developing applications in a more streamlined way.
