Curtin University is one of the most reputable, well regarded tertiary institutions in Australia and Brown Beagle Software was excited to team up with them on this unique, groundbreaking research project.

Brief

To create an open source framework that integrates and unifies time-based media and allows for sharing across users. Put simply, the intention of the GEODE Project is to return control of multiple media sources back to the media owner.

Our Solution

• GEODE server - The GEODE server, and its protocol formed the first half of our development. Our implementation involved a simple REST based interface that allowed multiple servers to ‘friend’ each other and share media between themselves.
• Web Interface - The management interface is a web-based application that provides user authorisation controls and media management.
• Integrating technologies - Being a research project we were able to use many leading technologies such as OAuth, YADIS, REST, Document Database and Twitter style friending. Using these technologies we were able to leverage existing protocols and continue to expand upon the possibilities of Internet services.

Result

The GEODE project was developed as a framework for other developers to build upon. One project using this framework is a touch table that helps teach children with autism. The table acts as a educational aid that provides greater flexibility, structure and autonomy in the classroom. Researchers have noted that the table is a great way to introduce these kids to the concept of playing with others.

We continue to be on-going partners in the GEODE Project and look forward to all the developments to come.
